Nutrition Evidence Alert – March 2022 – Endurance Sport – the Role of Key Nutrients

Welcome to the March edition of the Nutrition Evidence Alert.

Recent years have seen an increase in interest and participation in endurance sports, such as marathons, ultramarathons, triathlons and cycling events. Whilst the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted on the ability to compete, there is continued interest in how individuals can maximise their personal performance at such events. As such, athletes are looking at how targeted dietary or supplement strategies can be tailored to support or enhance sports performance.

This edition of the Nutrition Evidence alert brings you a selection of the evidence on sport, with a particular focus on endurance sport. Justin Roberts, the NED Editor-in-Chief and Associate Professor of Health and Exercise Nutrition at the Cambridge Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences, has selected his top picks of the evidence, so you can expand your understanding on this topic. Justin has also provided his expert opinion on a new research article – a systematic review on the impacts of probiotics on athletic performance. You can read that here.

We are also fortunate this month to have the input from one of our Expert Reviewers, Marc Bubbs. Marc is the Director of Performance Nutrition for Canada Basketball and consultant performance nutritionist for a portfolio of professional and Olympic athletes. You can read Marc’s take on a 2021 meta-analysis looking at the effect of dietary nitrate on human muscle power here.

To expand your reading, the editorial team has selected  49 Randomised Controlled Trials released within the last 5 years on nutrition and sport.

Happy researching!
