BOOK REVIEW – Anti Cancer. A new way of life by David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD

“All of us have cancer cells in our bodies. But not all of us will develop cancer.”

This international best seller is a fascinating read tracking the personal experience of Dr. David Servan-Schreiber from his cancer diagnosis through surgery, treatment and his ultimate discovery of personalised nutrition and lifestyle medicine. Although the book is focused on cancer and his accidental discovery of a tumour whilst conducting a research project, it also explores more general issues surrounding men’s health and the psychological processes men go through when coming to terms with a diagnosis and confronting a treatment program. It expertly addresses the ‘elephant in the room ‘none other than the gap in traditional medicine training regarding nutrition, and the need for medics (in this case oncology specialists) to have more in-depth training in this area. Ultimately the book advocates an integrated approach to cancer where nutrition plays a key part alongside surgical and oncology protocols. This is a great read and offers plenty of tips on anti-inflammatory diets and cancer prevention in a very readable style.
