23 Jun 2014 BANT Supports Action on Sugar’s Recommendations
BANT today issued its full support for Action on Sugar’s seven-point plan to control sugar in foods and soft drinks in a bid to tackle childhood obesity.
BANT Chair Miguel Toribio-Mateas said: “BANT is fully behind Action on Sugar’s recommendations to cut down the level of sugar in foods. Research shows sugar can be addictive and hugely detrimental to health and that is not limited to obesity.
“Registered Nutritional Therapists are armed with tools to help individuals reduce the amount of sugar they consume and as a result improve their health in both the short and long-term. A carefully implemented sugar tax will almost certainly help to reduce the nation’s sugar intake, which in turn, will ease the huge burden on the healthcare system.”
Action on Sugar is a group of specialists, including doctors, concerned with sugar and its effects on health and wants to introduce measures to cut sugar by 40% in food by 2020.
The group’s seven proposed measures are:
- Reduce added sugars in food by 40% by 2020
- Ban all forms of targeted marketing of ultra-processed, unhealthy foods and drinks to children
- Disassociate physical activity with obesity by banning junk food sports sponsorships
- Reduce fat by 15% in ultra-processed foods by 2020
- Limit the availability of ultra-processed foods and sweetened soft drinks as well as reducing portion sizes
- Introduce a sugar tax to incentivise healthier food
