Session Title: Are Ketogenic Diets the Future for Brain Health?

Session Outline:

This session explores what a ketogenic diet is, why it can be an effective therapy for a range of brains and how you might support a client to try it.  In addition, it will look at why mitochondrial dysfunction and insulin resistance as well as circadian rhythm are so important for brain health.

  • Identify the differences between the standard UK diet, low carbohydrate and ketogenic diets
  • Understand how fat is converted into ketones and how ketones are used in the body
  • Explain what nutritional ketosis is and the ketone levels that apply
  • Recognise how glucose levels relate to ketone levels in the blood
  • Identify a range of health conditions for which a ketogenic diet may be a therapeutic option
  • Describe the mechanisms which a ketogenic diet may help address in relation to mental health and neurodiverse conditions.
  • Explain how a carnivore diet is different from but can be part of a ketogenic approach.
  • Recognise why plant foods can be toxic and some people may benefit from an elimination approach.
  • Understand how insulin resistance is at the root cause of many brain health problems.
