Sue McGarrigle – The Role of Bacterial Metabolites in Health

Thursday 30th April 2020

Click here to access the presentation slides.

Further information

The microbiome has a significant impact on our health and on associated diseases. The maintenance and support of intestinal health and the integrity of the gut barrier is one of the most important goals as these two closely related variables are primary determinants of our overall health. There is a high level of variation of gut flora on a day to day basis and the intake of prebiotic fibre can be beneficial. Combining fruit and plant fibres with beneficial bacteria produce microbial metabolites which can not only have protective effects but can also be utilised by our metabolism to influence many factors through our body systems.

Rose Holmes – Understanding Antioxidants Better

Tuesday 4 February 2020

Click here to access the presentation slides.

Further information

‘Free radicals come in many shapes, sizes and chemical configurations’ (according to Harvard.edu), causing oxidative stress in the body which can damage cells and result in chronic health conditions. Free radical fighters (antioxidants) also come in a variety of forms and may aid the body in defending the body and repairing DNA to maintain cellular health.

In this webinar we will look at some of the antioxidant categories, particularly at flavonoids (e.g. flavonols, flavanols and anthocyanins), as well as antioxidant vitamins, co-factors, carotenoids and enzymatic antioxidants (e.g. superoxide dismutase).

We will look particularly at some ‘superfood’ botanicals to utilise alongside dietary antioxidant sources toward better health outcomes and healthy ageing. In particular we will look at Açaí, Camu- Camu, Graviola, and Matcha.

We will also look briefly at why the rich, natural environment of the Amazonian Rainforest can provide superior, nutrient-dense phytochemicals.

Sue McGarrigle – The Role of DHA in the Cardiovascular System

Monday 23rd of April 2018

Click here to access the presentation slides.
Click here to access the DHA Practitioner References.

Further information

Population studies have indicated that those with lower levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) or DHA/ eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) (combined) in their blood lipid, due to lower intakes, were at a significantly greater risk for coronary heart disease, fatal ischemic events, and sudden cardiac death. The increasing intake of omega-6 fatty acids worldwide causes a decrease in the body’s natural production of omega-3 fatty acids and an increase in arachidonic acid (AA). This lecture will look at the specific protective effects of DHA within the cardiovascular system and the mechanisms involved plus the effects on numerous non-conventional risk factors, which are not routinely measured. DHA rather than EPA is preferentially incorporated into the myocardial cell membrane and numerous intervention trials indicate that higher intakes of DHA plus EPA can favourably influence several risk factors for CVD.

Ben Brown – Does Irritable Bowel Syndrome Exist?

Tuesday 27th of February 2018

Click here to access the presentation slides.

Further information

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an umbrella diagnosis made using symptom-based criteria that does not help to direct treatment. Consequently, people with IBS are often poorly managed and symptoms remain a burden for approximately 20% of people. An alternative view is that IBS does not exist as a clinical entity but is in fact a clinical presentation of several distinct, independent underlying conditions.

Clinical management then requires an approach based on our evolving knowledge of the underlying multi-factorial origins of “IBS-like” symptoms unique to each individual.  Accessible and cost-effective nutritional, metabolic and digestive assessments can help identify the cause of symptoms and direct and personalise supportive protocols.

This webinar explores the underlying causes of digestive symptoms as well as the clinical assessment tools that can be used to identify them. We also look at how assessment can be used to inform personalised dietary, lifestyle and nutritional interventions that may improve physiological function, restore gastrointestinal health and resolve symptoms.

In this important lecture, you will explore:

  • What the underlying causes of “IBS-like” symptoms are.
  • How to identify unique causes of digestive symptoms.
  • Personalised protocols based on lifestyle and nutritional medicine.

Thursday 25th of May 2017

Click here to access the presentation slides.

Further information

In this webinar, Alessandro Ferretti discusses how the environment and lifestyle have obvious effects on our patients’ physiology but do patients respond in the same manner? In recent times, we have seen numerous attempts to define the perfect and most effective diet and yet, via bad science, bias or pure contradicting evidence, we have not seen long lasting results. The issue is – what you don’t measure, you don’t see. Using simple tracking methods, not labs, it is possible to see the connections between circadian rhythms, sleep, blood glucose, cortisol and HRV. Alessandro will go through clinical applications of his research projects and papers highlighting the importance of individual approach to patients. He will explain how basics must be addressed prior to digging deeper.

Alessandro Ferretti – Bio

Alessandro graduated from the Institute of Optimum Nutrition in 2001 and formed Equilibria Health Ltd with his partner Jules in 2004. With a growing team of Nutritionists and a Medical Doctor, Equilibria Health is now recognized as one of the UK’s leading providers of nutrition education.

Alessandro delivers annual series of UK wide practitioner and medical professionals postgraduate seminars, workshops & master classes on metabolism, health and performance and nutrigenomics. Michelle Barrow – Evidence based practice vs. Personalised practice

Thursday 23 February 2017

Click here to access the presentation slides.

Further information

This webinar explores the meanings of evidence-based practice and personalised practice. Evidence based medicine has had numerous criticisms over the last few years but does personalised medicine provide the answers? We explore the various meanings of ‘personalised nutrition’ with one being personalised to the individual’s needs and another that refers to interventions based on genetic profile of the individual. The strengths, limitations and ethical consideration of personalised, evidence-based, nutrition practice will be reviewed. More questions may be raised than answered, but these questions are essential for informed practice.

Michelle Barrow

Michelle has a first class degree in Nutritional Therapy, a Masters (MSc) degree in Evidence-Based Practice and is a Qualified Teacher in the Lifelong Learning Sector (QTLS).

As well as running a private practice Michelle works as Head of Education at the Centre of Nutrition Education and Lifestyle Management (CNELM). She leads the Personalised Nutrition and Longevity Masters degree module and the undergraduate Personalised Nutrition Interventions module.

In 2012 Michelle started a professional doctorate (DProf) at Middlesex University. Her research project aims to develop clinical tools for personalised nutrition and obesity management. These tools could provide an evidence base for personalised nutrition, which can use Bayesian analysis to make probabilistic predictions from empirical data. She will complete in 2019.

Joy Skipper – Beyond Nutritional Therapy

Tuesday 24 January 2017

Click here to access the presentation slides.

Further information

Studying for your degree or diploma is just the first step towards a new career, but the hard work doesn’t stop there. The next step is finding your niche, and finding work! In Joy’s experience most Nutritional Therapists have a second string to their bow – something else that supports their new knowledge. For Joy it was a history of working with food, and completing internationally in sports – with these contacts she could spread her wings and diversify into other areas that included nutrition. If you don’t have your ‘niche’ yet and need some ideas to find it, this presentation aims to show you how to think outside of the box, and hopefully have fun whilst finding new clients.

About Joy Skipper

Joy is passionate about food and nutrition, and has worked in the food industry for over twenty years, writing food features and cookery books as well as advising clients on the health benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle. For the past 16 years Joy has competed successfully as an International rower and sculler, in lightweight, heavyweight and Masters events.

In 2011 Joy joined an expedition to row 1000km of the Zambezi, both as a rower and also as the Team Nutritionist.

More recently Joy has started to compete in endurance cycling events, including Bangkok to Singapore and LEJOG, and this year will be taking part in Le Cure in the Alps.

Joy’s own sporting experience ensures she understands the demands put on the body and mind in tough training schedules and races, and she uses this experience when helping athletes and sports people to reach their peak performance through diet and lifestyle changes.

Rachel Hoyle – Nucleotides: Nutrition’s Best Kept Secret

Monday 14th November 2016

Click here to access the presentation slides.
Click here to access the Nucleotides Poster.

Further information

Nucleotides in evolutionary terms are at the very start of life itself, providing the building blocks through the formation of DNA and RNA. Their role as building blocks is well known, but not as well known or recognised are their multi-functional roles within the organism; among which are providing cellular energy sources (ATP), acting as a mediator of cellular signaling and regulating enzyme functions. This presentation informs the practitioners that the role of nucleotides goes far beyond those that are needed by all of the cells in the human body during periods of regeneration, growth and repair. Showing Nucleotides are conditionally essential nutrients that have been forgotten through the constraints of modern diet and lifestyle. By the end of this webinar practitioners should be able to assess how essential nucleotides are and to consider and ensure their inclusion into their patient’s dietary regimes.

About Rachel Hoyle

Rachel Hoyle, BSc, graduated from Birmingham University in 1984, and started her health product development role. Her ‘nucleotide’ life journey started in the late ’80’s on meeting the pioneer of nucleotide supplementation, Dr. Peter Koeppel; biochemist/immunologist. Rachel formed her own company, and worked closely with Dr. Koeppel, researching and developing supplements based on his purified nucleotide formulas. Focusing initially on animal health, Rachel organised UK nutrition trials, many under EFSA protocols. In the early 2000’s Rachel’s company was awarded UK Government research grants, to clinically test the nucleotide formulas that Dr. Koeppel had developed to overcome human dietary deficiencies. Once proven, the first balanced and purified nucleotides food supplements for digestive and immune health were placed on the market. Through her company, Nucleotide Nutrition Ltd, Rachel continues the nucleotide education and research, and is marketing specialist food supplements to practitioners, and supplying the nucleotide formulas (Nutri-tide®) to the nutrition market.

Emma Beswick and Kate Scott: Nutrigenomics in Practice – What, Why and How

Tuesday 10 May 2016

Further information

A final year nutritional therapy lecture stimulated a curiosity in Kate and Emma to learn more about nutrigenomics and inspired them to order their own 23andMe genotype tests. When the results arrived they were underwhelmed by the limitations of the 23andMe health reports and other online genotype analysis tools.

As a result, they founded Ingeneius with the objective of providing high quality genotype analysis and interpretation for use in clinical practice. The reports present genotype results in a functional medicine context providing health professionals with invaluable insight into the root cause of client’s symptoms and considerations for follow-up testing as well as nutrition and lifestyle support.

In this webinar Emma and Kate will explain what genotype interpretation is and why and how it can be used in a nutritional therapy context. They will then present a case study based on histamine intolerance to demonstrate this.

Emma and Kate are both qualified Nutritional Therapists who graduated from the College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM) in 2015 with a Diploma in Nutritional Therapy. They are the Directors and Founders of Ingeneius Health Ltd.

Miguel Toribio-Mateas: Skin Ageing. Is it all in the head? The Brain-Skin-Axis

Thursday 21 January 2016

Further information

In this webinar Miguel will be talking about the communication between the mind and the skin which involves a complex biochemical interplay between the psycho-immuno-endocrine-cutaneous system, encompassing the activities of the brain, the immune system and the skin, with the participation of different neuropeptides, interleukins, and immune system messengers. Many of the common dermatologic diseases seen regularly in our clinics, as well as premature skin ageing, are triggered and intensified by emotional stressors, either acute or chronic. These psychomediating pathogenetic factors are responsible for the hyperactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA) and the resulting neuro-immuno-endocrine cascade of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators involved in the pathogenesis of skin disease and ageing.

Miguel Toribio-Mateas is a nutrition health professional (BSc Honours in Nutritional Medicine) known for his longstanding service to the Nutritional Therapy profession as voluntary Chairman of the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT) and his guest lecturing roles at educational institutions such as The Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION), the British College of Nutrition and Health (BCNH) and The University of West London.
