{"id":5595,"date":"2016-08-08T09:49:46","date_gmt":"2016-08-08T08:49:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bantuat.org\/?p=5595"},"modified":"2016-08-08T09:49:46","modified_gmt":"2016-08-08T08:49:46","slug":"student-news-bulletin-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bant.org.uk\/student-news-bulletin-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Student News Bulletin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week new research highlights the importance of being a healthy weight at midlife and we explore the rich information available to us at BANT by looking at a piece on gluten sensitivity and the wealth of webinars available to us.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"line-height: 31.5pt; background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 22.5pt 0cm;\">Brain Ageing Accelerated by 10 Years with Midlife Overweight or Obesity<\/h3>\n<p>A new study from the University of Cambridge was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neurobiologyofaging.org\/article\/S0197-4580(16)30140-3\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging<\/a>,\u00a0which revealed that middle-aged adults who were overweight had reduced white matter volume in the brain, compared with their lean counterparts.\u00a0 The researchers conducted a cross-sectional study in which they analyzed data of 473 cognitively healthy adults aged 20-87.\u00a0 Participants were classified as lean, overweight or obese based on their BMI.\u00a0 Cerebral white and grey matter volume was assessed using MRI.\u00a0 <strong>Middle-aged adults who were overweight or obese had a white matter volume that was comparable to those of lean adults who were 10 years older.\u00a0 <\/strong>&#8220;The fact that we only saw these differences from middle age onwards raises the possibility that we may be particularly vulnerable at this age.
