{"id":5446,"date":"2016-06-20T09:05:48","date_gmt":"2016-06-20T08:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bantuat.org\/?p=5446"},"modified":"2016-06-20T09:05:48","modified_gmt":"2016-06-20T08:05:48","slug":"student-news-bulletin-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bant.org.uk\/student-news-bulletin-7\/","title":{"rendered":"Student News Bulletin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week\u2019s research is one that you might not be expecting; plant-based diets reduce the risk of diabetes.\u00a0 Also, one that\u2019ll be relevant to those of us studying for exams; sleep plays a key role in memory consolidation.\u00a0 And finally, exam tips!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Healthy vegetarian diet reduces type 2 diabetes risk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whilst there has been accumulating evidence for the disease risk reducing effect of a plant-based diet in the areas of cancer risk, diabetes risk and blood pressure reducing.\u00a0\u00a0 This study\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1002039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published in PLOS Medicine<\/a>\u00a0looked at the quality of the vegetarian diet, whether the diet was high in nutritious plant-based foods.\u00a0 Hu, a\u00a0senior author said, &#8220;A shift to a dietary pattern higher in healthful plant-based foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, and lower in animal-based foods, especially red and processed meats, can confer substantial health benefits in reducing risk of type 2 diabetes.&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/310953.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>How Sleep Improves Memory Uncovered<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A study from the University of California-Riverside\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2016\/06\/07\/1518202113.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/a>\u00a0showed that increase autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity during sleep was linked to memory improvement.\u00a0 In particular, ANS activity during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.\u00a0 Prof. Mednick explained, &#8220;The findings suggest that ANS activity during REM sleep may be an unexplored contributor to sleep-related improvements in memory performance.&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/310979.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Exams!
