{"id":5205,"date":"2016-05-02T10:31:48","date_gmt":"2016-05-02T09:31:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bantuat.org\/?p=5205"},"modified":"2016-06-09T17:51:40","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T16:51:40","slug":"student-news-bulletin-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bant.org.uk\/student-news-bulletin-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Student News Bulletin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, new research shows the dangers of fructose and further benefits of fruit &amp; veg.\u00a0 UCLA scientists report omega-3 can reverse fructose damaged genes, research identifies key antioxidant that protects against immuno-inflammation related to brain ageing, sleep deprivation shown to reduce \u2018good\u2019 cholesterol.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Omega-3 Fatty Acids Can Reverse Fructose Damaged Genes<br \/>\n<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352396416301438\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A new study published in EBioMedicine <\/a>\u00a0(published jointly by Cell and The Lancet) by UCLA life scientists found that fructose can damage hundreds of genes in the brain.\u00a0 Disruption was identified in the areas of metabolic, cell communication and inflammation regulation.<\/p>\n<p>However, the researchers also discovered the omega-3 fatty acid, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), seems to reverse the harmful changes.\u00a0 Xia Yang, a UCLA assistant professor\u00a0said, \u201cDHA changes not just one or two genes; it seems to push the entire gene pattern back to normal, which is remarkable\u201d.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/releases\/309479.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read article here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nrf2 Key Cytoprotective Antioxidant In Regulating\u00a0Brain Ageing<br \/>\n<\/strong>An international researcher team led by the Italian University of Molise,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4831196\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published a fascinating brain ageing mechanistic review in Immunity &amp; Ageing<\/a>.\u00a0 The research looked at the protective role of phytochemicals from fruit and vegetables, herbs and spices inregulating immuno-inflammatory oxidative and nitrosative stress\u00a0(IO&amp;NS) seen in brain ageing.\u00a0 Transcription factor nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) was identified as a key protective antioxidant.\u00a0 Nrf2 can be induced by the phytonutrients anthocyanin, catechin and epicatechin, found in red\/blue coloured fruits and vegetables, cocoa and others. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4831196\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read full study here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sleep deprivation may lower HDL cholesterol<br \/>\n<\/strong>Further evidence on the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation was recently\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/srep24828\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published in Scientific Reports<\/a>. \u00a0The study found that, \u201cjust one week of sleep deprivation begins to change the body&#8217;s immune response and metabolism\u201d said Vilma Aho, the study\u2019s co-author.\u00a0 Lower circulating high density lipoproteins (HDL) was seen in the sleep deprived population. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/309482.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read article here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>New student blog from CNELM\u00a0student, Sharon Peck<br \/>\n<\/strong>On the last Friday of every month we invite a BANT student member to guest blog for our <a href=\"https:\/\/bant.org.uk\/members-area\/student-area\/student-spotlight\/\">Student Spotlight<\/a> page.
