{"id":5028,"date":"2016-03-28T09:54:44","date_gmt":"2016-03-28T08:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bantuat.org\/?p=5028"},"modified":"2016-06-09T17:30:53","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T16:30:53","slug":"student-news-bulletin-28-03-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bant.org.uk\/student-news-bulletin-28-03-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Student News Bulletin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This week, new research shows how much sugar is actually in the fruit juices exempt from the sugar tax; Stanford Medicine collaborates\u00a0with 23andMe on their &#8216;MyHeart Counts&#8217; app and Science News talks &#8216;Microbes &amp; the Mind&#8217;&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Juice drinks may be exempt from the sugar tax but how much sugar do they really contain?<br \/>\n<\/strong>A <a href=\"http:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/6\/3\/e010330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new study<\/a> published this week by Boulton et al. and co-authored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actiononsugar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Action on Sugar<\/a> investigates the sugar content of fruit juices, juice drinks and smoothies (FJJDS) marketed towards children. Its findings show that 117 of the 203 FJJDS surveyed would receive a Food Standards Agency \u2018red\u2019 colour-coded label for sugars per standardised 200\u2005ml serving. 85 products contained at least 19g of sugars\u2014a child&#8217;s entire maximum daily amount of sugars. This is particularly poignant given their exemption from the 2018\u00a0sugar tax.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23andMe teams up with Stanford Medicine<br \/>\n<\/strong>The personal genetics company 23andMe has <a href=\"http:\/\/scopeblog.stanford.edu\/2016\/03\/21\/genetic-research-now-integrated-into-stanfords-myheart-counts-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teamed up<\/a> with Stanford Medicine to create a new aspect\u00a0to\u00a0their &#8216;MyHeart Counts&#8217; app. In addition to monitoring cardiovascular health, 23andMe customers will now be able to share their de-identified\u00a0data with MyHeart Counts researchers through the app, which is available on\u00a0i-phone. This will allow researchers to study interactions between cardiovascular health outcomes, activity levels, fitness and genetic variation, giving them better understanding of what keeps a healthy heart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is more likely to develop anxiety and depression? The bacteria in our guts may help to decide.<br \/>\n<\/strong>An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/microbes-can-play-games-mind?mode=magazine&amp;context=191647\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> appearing the April issue of Science News entitled &#8216;Microbes &amp; the Mind&#8217;, asks the question &#8216;can we soothe our minds by cultivating our gut bacteria?&#8217;.
