According to BANT CEO Satu Jackson,<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe health of the nation is dire. The statistics don\u2019t lie. As a nation, we are the sickest in Europe (1,3), with spiralling rates of obesity, overweight, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, cancer, and mental health. There have been an astounding <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 strategies and 680 policies put in place by the various governments since 1992 simply relating to obesity. They have all failed.<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(3).<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus on disease prevention is the only option if we are to future-proof the NHS.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need policies that recognise the major contributors of modern-day disease and understand which factors are modifiable with preventative measures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causality cannot be solved pharmaceutically. There is one tried and tested way to \u2018treat\u2019 diet-induced disease, and that is by improving how we eat. We need funding now to invest in long-term initiatives to change the current health trajectory. More than 50% of the UK national diet is comprised of these products. A 2024 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/384\/bmj-2023-077310\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that ultra-processed foods are linked to 32 harmful effects on health (5).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government continues to renege on policy on advertising and in-store \u2018Buy one get one free\u2019 (BOGOF) promotions allowing both manufacturers and retailers to continue profiting from sales of UPFDs whilst the nation\u2019s health worsens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must prioritise providing access to affordable health-promoting foods to all communities, particularly low-income families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BANT calls for a review of the current Sugar Tax to include ingredients such as maltodextrins and non-nutritive (artificial) sweeteners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The road to obesity is complex.
