{"id":17167,"date":"2021-07-24T10:15:35","date_gmt":"2021-07-24T09:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bant.org.uk\/?p=17167"},"modified":"2021-09-13T08:36:59","modified_gmt":"2021-09-13T07:36:59","slug":"nutrition-evidence-alert-july-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bant.org.uk\/nutrition-evidence-alert-july-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Nutrition Evidence Alert \u2013 July 2021 &#8211; COVID-19 &#038; Long COVID"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Welcome to the July edition of the Nutrition Evidence Alert.<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17170 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/bant.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/giorgi-iremadze-3OV0ft7mG_o-unsplash-291x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"\/\/bant.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/giorgi-iremadze-3OV0ft7mG_o-unsplash-291x800.jpg 291w, \/\/bant.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/giorgi-iremadze-3OV0ft7mG_o-unsplash-145x400.jpg 145w, \/\/bant.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/giorgi-iremadze-3OV0ft7mG_o-unsplash.jpg 436w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/>Emerging evidence and patient testimony suggest that a proportion of individuals testing positive for COVID-19 will experience on-going and long term symptoms, well after the acute infection is over.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/news\/article\/nice-sign-and-rcgp-set-out-further-details-about-the-uk-guideline-on-management-of-the-long-term-effects-of-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NICE guideline scope<\/a> produced in the latter part of 2020 defines long COVID as symptoms consistent with COVID-19 infection which persist for 12 weeks or longer.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/healthandsocialcare\/conditionsanddiseases\/bulletins\/prevalenceofongoingsymptomsfollowingcoronaviruscovid19infectionintheuk\/1july2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Office for National Statistics<\/a> using self-reported data estimates that close to 1 million people in the UK are suffering with long COVID.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of Long COVID are many and varied.\u00a0 Individuals may be affected with extreme fatigue, brain-fog, shortness of breath, chest pain, joint pain, depression and anxiety, tinnitus and more.\u00a0 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/coronavirus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2021\/06\/C1312-long-covid-plan-june-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent publication by the NHS<\/a> provides the full list of reported symptoms, and includes plans for publicly funded treatment and rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<p>Our Guest Editor this month, Karen Preece-Smith, brings to our attention the latest evidence on Long COVID and nutrition.\u00a0 Given the newness of this condition, there is limited research data, however some interesting reviews are being conducted on the role of nutrition, dietary antioxidants, immune rejuvenation and mitochondrial function.
