The Novel Foods Directive came into force on 15 May 1997, and manufacturers of food ingredients (including food supplement ingredients) developed or introduced to the UK or EU market since that date, have been required to obtain authorisation. Ingredients which have proven use in Europe prior to this date are deemed to be covered.
