Autoimmune Conditions, Latest Approaches, and Skin<\/h1>\n

Highly relevant to many practitioners given the prevalence and complexity of autoimmune health conditions plus the power of nutritional and lifestyle medicine to address key underpinning mechanisms<\/p>\n

Alex Manos<\/h3>\n

Alex addressed resilience in connection to autoimmune disease. Resilience used to be considered a genetic condition but recent beliefs are that our environment and upbringing impact this. Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual resilience are interconnected and can all play a part in health and wellbeing. Considering allostasis (maintaining homeostasis) and allostatic load (cumulative burden of adaptations) are important aspects when working with client autoimmunity.<\/p>\n

Alex explained that a positive mental attitude can affect not only wellness, but even how the body reacts to medication. He discussed using Trauma Informed Nutrition to complement the nutritional therapy approach, using Heart Rate Variability as a biomarker to help indicate resilience. The connection between microbiota and mitochondria was discussed, relating to body systems and autoimmunity, moving on to how clients can be helped by focusing on their resilience.<\/p>\n

Dr Sarah Davies<\/h3>\n

As a functional medicine specialist, Dr Sarah Davies discussed the functional approaches to manage autoimmune diseases, both from her personal and clinical experiences. The aim of the functional approach is to identify the root causes of the autoimmune diseases by basic medical and functional screenings and to make a successful treatment plan by educating and empowering the patients. Diet and nutritional interventions were highlighted for an efficient dietary plan along with microbiome interventions, sleep and stress management. Detox support and group therapy was also encouraged.<\/p>\n

Kate Garden<\/h3>\n

Kate walks through tricky to treat skin autoimmune conditions with a focus on the gut skin axis and skin microbiome, psoriasis in particular. She explains psoriasis from a Functional Medicine perspective looking at antecedents, triggers and mediators before discussing nutritional and lifestyle interventions and possible functional testing.<\/p>\n
