Dr Ruth Tapsell<\/h3>\n

Ruth\u2019s session focused on the links between nutrition, exercise, stress and sleep on T2 diabetes, the main elements being on nutrition. She introduced the concept of a metabolic time-bomb, present in many people, leading to T2 diabetes. From the discussion and case studies presented, we can see that by working collaboratively, this time-bomb can be diffused. Ruth explained how remission is possible and demonstrated actual cases from her patients.<\/p>\n

For dietary changes, Ruth shared details of a low-carbohydrate diet and the results that can be achieved, both from published papers and other research by professionals in the field.<\/p>\n

Kirsty Baxter<\/h3>\n

The main focus of Kristy\u2019s session was on the risk factors related to type 2 diabetes and the ways to manage it by changing lifestyle.<\/p>\n

Being a metabolism specialist, Kirsty highlighted that research has established strong links between obesity and insulin resistance as well as the effectiveness of using a low carb diet for losing weight and improving insulin resistance, which is the fundamental for management and remission of type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n

For preventing type 2 diabetes, Kristy emphasised the dietary approaches to lose weight which can be achieved by nutritional therapy combined with behavioural changes and how the nutritional therapists could play a vital role to support the patients. She also talked about the benefits of using functional methods regarding diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. In addition, the case studies that were presented by Kristy successfully showed the remission of type 2 diabetes and withdrawal from diabetic medications by applying functional medicine matrix.<\/p>\n

Beth Edwards<\/h3>\n

Beth\u2019s session focused on type 1 diabetes, interestingly from the perspective of her lived experience of the condition (she was diagnosed with at age nine) as well her clinical experience. Beth manages a clinic which exclusively specialises in working with clients with type 1 diabetes.
\nAs well as being a Registered Nutritional Therapist Beth also has MSc in Health psychology. She discusses that type 1 diabetes is 50% a physical condition and 50% emotional, diving into the research being done in this area, as well as how she manages this in clinic.<\/p>\n

She discussed the current lack of good evidence around reversal of type 1 diabetes, but extensively discussed different approaches to the management of type 1 diabetes, including emerging research on the gut microbiota, insulin delivery methods, methods of blood glucose measurement (including CGM), food-based approaches, nutrient support and lifestyle interventions.<\/p>\n
