css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1618397491357{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;padding-left: 30px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Red Flag Symptoms:<a id=\"\" class=\"hanbooktotop\" href=\"#top-section\"><i class=\"qode_icon_font_awesome fa fa-arrow-circle-up\"><\/i><span class=\"hanbooktotopspan\"> Top<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The following are classed as red flag symptoms which require urgent referral to a GP:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>black, tarry stools (cancer)<\/li>\n<li>blood in sputum, vomit, urine or stools<\/li>\n<li>blueness of the lips<\/li>\n<li>change in bowel habit<\/li>\n<li>change in skin (rash, colour, bruising) \/ skin mole or lesion (size, shape, colour, bleeding, itching, pain)<\/li>\n<li>chest pain<\/li>\n<li>convulsions<\/li>\n<li>delirium (hearing voices\/hallucinations)<\/li>\n<li>difficulty swallowing<\/li>\n<li>excessive thirst<\/li>\n<li>frequent nosebleeds<\/li>\n<li>increased urination<\/li>\n<li>loss of appetite<\/li>\n<li>loss of consciousness<\/li>\n<li>loss of vision<\/li>\n<li>mental health &#8211; re<span class=\"cf0\">view specific reg flag symptoms for mental health conditions <a href=\"https:\/\/bant.org.uk\/bant-professional-practice-handbook\/specific-conditions\/#mental-health\">here<\/a><\/span><!--EndFragment --><\/li>\n<li>neck stiffness in a patient with fever<\/li>\n<li>non-menstrual vaginal bleeding<\/li>\n<li>pain on passing urine<\/li>\n<li>pain which is persistent, severe or unexplained in any part of the body<\/li>\n<li>painless ulcers or fissures<\/li>\n<li>pallor<\/li>\n<li>persistent cough<\/li>\n<li>persistent vomiting and\/or diarrhoea<\/li>\n<li>severe mood changes\/depression<\/li>\n<li>shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>suicidal thoughts<\/li>\n<li>swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat<\/li>\n<li>unexplained fever, swelling or lumps, weight loss or gain<\/li>\n<li>vaginal bleeding with pain in pregnancy or after missing one period<\/li>\n<li>vomit containing \u201ccoffee grounds\u201d (coagulated blood, twisted bowel)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; thickness=&#8221;30&#8243;][vc_row_inner row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; anchor=&#8221;referring-to-a-gp-with-red-flag-symptoms&#8221; This is to protect the NTP and the client. A client\u2019s symptoms and case history must be taken to appropriately determine whether testing is required, and if so, which tests are the most suitable. Not all clients require testing, and testing must not be assumed as the starting point for every client. Functional testing can significantly increase the price of nutritional therapy consultations and could result in a client feeling unhappy if completing unnecessary tests.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3>Referring to a GP with Red Flag Symptoms:<a id=\"\" class=\"hanbooktotop\" href=\"#top-section\"><i class=\"qode_icon_font_awesome fa fa-arrow-circle-up\"><\/i><span class=\"hanbooktotopspan\"> Top<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bant.org.uk\/bant-professional-practice-handbook\/red-flags\/#red-flag-symptoms\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red flag symptoms<\/a> could be indicative of a serious medical condition and it is important for the client\u2019s health and the practitioner\u2019s protection, that any individual client or group participant reporting a red flag symptom is advised to seek a medical opinion.<\/p>\n<p>The safest protocol is for red flag symptoms to be discussed with the GP before commencing nutritional therapy. If red flag symptoms are identified on the initial health questionnaire or during a discovery call, the NT must advise the client to consult their GP before coming to the initial consultation. If alerted to a red flag symptom at a consultation, the NT can choose to stop the consultation until the client has seen their GP. A client with a red flag symptom must always consult a GP or other medical professional for assessment before the continuation of nutritional therapy.<\/p>\n<p>An NT must record in their consultation notes that they advised a client to seek a medical opinion about their red flag symptom. \u00a0If a client refuses to seek a medical opinion, BANT strongly advise the NT stop working with the client for their own protection. What should I do if a client is having suicidal thoughts?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Suicidal thoughts are a red flag symptom requiring urgent referral to a GP. If a client indicates that they have suicidal thoughts and the NT believes they may be a harm to themselves or to others, they must call 999 or the client\u2019s GP surgery. If calling the GP surgery, the NT is advised to follow up with a letter, to help ensure protection for both the client and the practitioner. Even if the client has not provided consent for the NT to contact their GP, in these circumstances, the practitioner can <a href=\"https:\/\/bant.org.uk\/bant-professional-practice-handbook\/confidentiality-and-consent\/#disclosing-confidential-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contact the GP without consent<\/a> and break the client\/therapist confidentiality agreement. For transparency, the NT is advised to let the client know they will be contacting their GP, even if consent has not been
