BANT Cyprus Branch Committee

BANT Cyprus Branch Committee Profile

The Committee shall also promote the image of BANT in Cyprus as the seal of excellence for nutritional health professionals, and shall take action to ensure that all NPs in Cyprus strictly follow BANT’s Professional Practice guidelines, in order to enhance public confidence in the profession. Furthermore, the Committee shall promote the functional philosophy of healthcare and encourage cooperation with other health sector professionals. It will also work with the Cypriot Universities to develop a curriculum for Nutritional Therapy (NT) courses and educate health clinics on the health and cost benefits of employing NPs.

BANT Cyprus Branch Committee Objectives

The BANT Cyprus Branch Committee’s two main objectives are:

  1. To secure the legal recognition of the Profession of Nutrition Practitioner (NP) in Cyprus
  2. The introduction of legislation providing for the registration of NPs as a separate category in the existing Statutory Council, on the basis of having met the NOS

Short-term objectives:

  • To defend the Profession against the current efforts of the Clinical Dietitians to pass a ‘monopoly’ Law that criminalises nutritional advice to patients for anyone  who is not a Clinical Dietitian
  • Continue to coordinate a lobbying campaign demanding the redrafting of a Bill that was influenced by the Dietitians’ leadership and seeks to regulate only the ‘Nutritionist’, with the inclusion of NT as a separate category. As an absolute minimum, the Committee shall demand that the draft Bill must be amended to clarify that the term “Nutritionist” does not include BANT Registered “NPs” and will not affect the practice of BANT NPs in Cyprus. The Committee shall then proceed with strong lobbying with the Ministry to draft a new Bill for the inclusion of NT as a separate category. This is a commitment already undertaken by former Minister Dr Malas who recognised in his letter to the House of Parliament the existence of the profession of NT

Long-term objectives:

  • To secure the legal recognition of the Profession of the NP in Cyprus and the introduction of legislation which shall permit the registration of NPs on the basis that they practice to the standards as laid out in the Professional Practice Handbook
  • To promote the Profession of NT to the public, through lectures, presentations, special events, articles in newspapers and magazines, TV programmes, social media etc.
  • To promote the image of BANT in Cyprus as the seal of excellence for nutritional health professionals
  • To ensure that all NPs in Cyprus shall strictly follow BANT’s standards of Professional Practice, in order to enhance public confidence in the NT profession
  • To promote the functional philosophy of healthcare and encourage cooperation with other health sector professionals, such as doctors, psychologists, nurses and nutritionists
  • To work with the Cypriot Universities and develop a core curriculum that satisfies the National Occupational Standards (NOS) of the United Kingdom, to introduce NT courses in both undergraduate programmes and post-graduate programmes for health professionals who want to enhance the results of their practice
  • To provide continuing professional development opportunities for NPs within Cyprus, through webinars and lectures
  • To educate health clinics and day-care health establishments on the health and cost benefits of employing NPs
